Estimate body fat percentage from BMI, age, and gender.
Body fat
19.5%
Body fat estimate is based on BMI, age, and gender.
19.5% body fat is within the average healthy range. Regular exercise and a balanced diet will help you move toward the fitness category.

Step by step
Use our BMI calculator first if you don't know your BMI, then enter the value here.
Age affects body fat distribution โ the formula adjusts for this automatically.
Enter 1 for male or 0 for female. Men and women have different essential fat thresholds.
See your estimated body fat percentage and which ACE category it falls into.
Body fat percentage is a more meaningful fitness metric than weight alone. Track it monthly to measure real body composition changes.
Use the ACE category table to set a target body fat range that matches your fitness level โ athlete, fitness, or average.
High body fat โ especially visceral fat โ is linked to diabetes, heart disease, and metabolic issues. Knowing your number is the first step.
Body fat percentage is a more precise health indicator than BMI because it directly measures the proportion of fat in your body rather than total weight relative to height. Two people with identical BMI can have very different body compositions โ a trained athlete and a sedentary person may share the same BMI but have body fat percentages that differ by 10โ15 percentage points.
Visceral fat โ the fat stored around internal organs โ is the most metabolically dangerous type. Even people with a normal BMI can carry excess visceral fat, a condition sometimes called 'normal weight obesity.' This is why body fat percentage, combined with waist circumference, gives a more complete health picture than BMI alone.
Formula
BFP = 1.20 ร BMI + 0.23 ร Age โ 16.2 (men) | BFP = 1.20 ร BMI + 0.23 ร Age โ 5.4 (women)
This calculator uses the BMI-based body fat estimation formula. BMI is body mass index from weight and height. Age is in years. The gender constant differs because women naturally carry more essential fat than men. The result is an estimate โ for precise measurement, bioelectric impedance or hydrostatic testing is recommended.
Worked example
A 30-year-old male with a BMI of 24: BFP = 1.20 ร 24 + 0.23 ร 30 โ 16.2 = 28.8 + 6.9 โ 16.2 = 19.5%. This falls in the Average category (18โ24% for men). A 30-year-old female with the same BMI: BFP = 1.20 ร 24 + 0.23 ร 30 โ 5.4 = 28.8 + 6.9 โ 5.4 = 30.3%, which falls in the Average category (25โ31% for women).

The scientific term for body fat is adipose tissue. It serves several vital roles in the body โ its primary function is to store lipids that the body converts into energy when needed. Beyond energy storage, adipose tissue secretes important hormones, provides cushioning around organs, and acts as insulation to help regulate body temperature.
Body fat is broadly divided into two types. Essential body fat is the minimum amount required to sustain life and support reproductive functions. For men, this is typically 2โ5%, and for women it is 10โ13% due to physiological differences. Storage fat, on the other hand, accumulates in adipose tissue either as subcutaneous fat (just beneath the skin) or visceral fat (surrounding internal organs in the abdominal cavity). While some storage fat is normal and necessary, excess amounts carry significant health risks.
The healthy body fat range for men is generally considered to be 8โ19%, while for women it is 21โ33%. Falling below essential fat levels is a serious medical concern and should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) defines the following body fat percentage categories for adult men and women:
| Category | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Essential Fat | 10 โ 13% | 2 โ 5% |
| Athletes | 14 โ 20% | 6 โ 13% |
| Fitness | 21 โ 24% | 14 โ 17% |
| Average | 25 โ 31% | 18 โ 24% |
| Obese | 32%+ | 25%+ |

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies obesity as one of the leading preventable causes of death globally. Excess body fat โ particularly visceral fat around the abdomen โ disrupts hormonal balance, raises inflammatory markers, and directly increases the risk of several serious conditions:
Visceral fat in particular plays a role in releasing cytokines โ proteins involved in cell signalling โ that can elevate cardiovascular risk. It is also directly linked to higher LDL cholesterol and insulin resistance, which can progress to type 2 diabetes if left unmanaged.
Important note
Being overweight by BMI does not always mean excess body fat. Highly muscular individuals can have a high BMI with healthy body fat levels. Body fat percentage gives a more complete picture than BMI alone.
The rate at which body fat accumulates varies between individuals and is influenced by both genetic and behavioural factors. Lack of physical activity and excess calorie intake are the primary behavioural drivers, but genetics also determine where and how quickly fat is stored.
Fat distribution also shifts with age. After the age of 40 โ or after menopause in women โ reduced sex hormone levels tend to redirect fat storage. Men are more likely to accumulate fat around the abdomen, while women may see increased fat around the hips and thighs. Managing diet and regular exercise has been consistently shown to reduce stored fat regardless of age.
This calculator uses equations developed at the Naval Health Research Center by Hodgdon and Beckett (1984). The method requires three body measurements:
Men โ Metric (SI)
BFP = 495 รท (1.0324 โ 0.19077 ร logโโ(waist โ neck) + 0.15456 ร logโโ(height)) โ 450
Women โ Metric (SI)
BFP = 495 รท (1.29579 โ 0.35004 ร logโโ(waist + hip โ neck) + 0.22100 ร logโโ(height)) โ 450
Fat Mass (FM)
FM = BFP ร Weight
Lean Mass (LM)
LM = Weight โ FM
Body fat can also be estimated from BMI, age, and gender using the following formulas:
Adult Males
BFP = 1.20 ร BMI + 0.23 ร Age โ 16.2
Adult Females
BFP = 1.20 ร BMI + 0.23 ร Age โ 5.4
Boys
BFP = 1.51 ร BMI โ 0.70 ร Age โ 2.2
Girls
BFP = 1.51 ร BMI โ 0.70 ร Age + 1.4
For more precise measurements, bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) or hydrostatic density testing are available at many gyms, clinics, and health centres.
