2

Set contribution rates

Employee contribution is typically 12% of basic. Employer also contributes 12% (though part goes to EPS).

3

Add interest rate

Enter the current EPF interest rate. The EPFO declares this annually — currently around 8.25%.

4

Choose years

Enter how many years you plan to stay in employment contributing to EPF.

Why use this calculator?

🌅

Retirement planning

EPF is a core pillar of retirement savings for salaried Indians. Calculate your expected EPF corpus and use it alongside the retirement calculator to close the gap with SIPs.

💼

Job change decisions

Withdrawing EPF early when changing jobs has a huge long-term cost. See how much corpus you sacrifice by withdrawing vs transferring to a new employer.

📊

Total retirement picture

Combine your EPF corpus estimate with PPF, NPS, and SIP projections to see your full retirement portfolio and identify any shortfall.

How EPF corpus is projected — formula and example

EPF is one of the most powerful wealth-building instruments for salaried Indians precisely because it is automatic, compulsory, and invisible. You never see the money leaving your account, which removes the temptation to spend it. Over a 30-year career, even a modest basic salary of ₹30,000/month at 8.25% interest can build a corpus of ₹75–80 lakh purely from EPF contributions — with no active investment decisions required.

The biggest threat to EPF wealth is premature withdrawal. According to EPFO data, a significant percentage of EPF accounts are settled or withdrawn when employees change jobs. This is financially devastating. An EPF corpus of ₹5 lakh withdrawn at age 30 would have grown to ₹35+ lakh by age 58 at 8.25% interest. Employees who withdraw EPF during job changes permanently forfeit this compounding benefit. The correct action is always to transfer the EPF balance using the EPFO portal to the new employer’s account using your Universal Account Number (UAN).

For a complete retirement picture, use this EPF projection alongside the PPF calculator and the retirement calculator. Your EPF corpus is the mandatory baseline. PPF is the voluntary tax-free supplement. Any shortfall between (EPF + PPF) and your retirement corpus target is what your SIPs need to cover. This three-pillar approach — EPF, PPF, SIP — is the simplest and most tax-efficient retirement framework for Indian salaried employees.

Formula

Monthly Contribution = Basic Salary × (Employee % + Employer EPF %) / 100

This total monthly contribution is then compounded at the annual EPF interest rate using the same formula as a recurring investment. Employee contributes 12% of basic salary. Of the employer’s 12%, typically 3.67% goes to EPF and 8.33% goes to EPS (pension scheme). For this calculator, enter the full employer contribution and the projection treats it as going fully to EPF for simplicity.

Worked example

Basic salary ₹50,000/month. Employee contribution 12% = ₹6,000. Employer EPF portion 3.67% = ₹1,835. Total monthly EPF contribution ≈ ₹7,835. At 8.25% interest for 25 years: EPF corpus ≈ ₹1.04 crore. Total contributions = ₹23.5 lakh. Interest earned = ₹80.5 lakh — three and a half times the amount actually deposited, entirely tax-free.

What is the Employee Provident Fund?

The Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is a mandatory retirement savings scheme for employees in India's organised sector. It was established under the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, and is administered by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Both the employee and employer contribute a fixed percentage of the employee's basic salary and Dearness Allowance (DA) into a permanent account identified by a Unique Account Number (UAN).

Unlike government employees who are additionally entitled to pensions under separate schemes, private sector employees rely on EPF as their primary mandatory retirement benefit. The fund accumulates over the course of a career, earning compound interest at a rate declared annually by the EPFO, and is paid out as a lump sum at retirement or upon meeting specific withdrawal conditions.

How an EPF Calculator Helps You

Manually tracking EPF contributions, interest accruals, and projected corpus across decades of employment is complex and error-prone. An EPF calculator removes that burden entirely.

📊

Track Your Savings Instantly

See exactly how much your EPF account has accumulated and how much interest it has earned — without manually computing each month's contribution.

🔄

Handles Rate Changes Automatically

When the EPFO revises the interest rate, simply update the input. The calculator instantly recalculates your projected corpus without any manual adjustment.

Accurate Every Time

The formula-based calculation eliminates arithmetic errors. You get a reliable projection each time you enter your data.

🎯

Retirement Planning Made Simple

Use the projected corpus to identify whether your EPF savings alone are sufficient, or whether you need to supplement with PPF, NPS, or SIPs.

What You Need to Use This Calculator

Keep the following details handy before you start. All inputs are available on your salary slip or EPFO passbook.

1

Monthly Basic Salary + DA

EPF is calculated on basic salary plus Dearness Allowance — not your full CTC. Check your salary slip for the exact figure.

2

Employee Contribution Rate

The statutory employee contribution is 12% of basic + DA. Some employees opt for a higher Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) contribution.

3

Employer Contribution Rate

The employer also contributes 12% of basic + DA. Of this, 8.33% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS) and 3.67% goes directly to EPF.

4

Current EPF Interest Rate

The EPFO declares the interest rate annually. For FY 2023-24, the rate is 8.25%. Always use the latest declared rate for accurate projections.

5

Years of Service

Enter the total number of years you expect to contribute to EPF — from your current age to your planned retirement age.

6

Current EPF Balance

If you already have an existing EPF balance, include it as the opening amount. This is available on your EPFO passbook via the UAN portal.

EPF Calculation Formula

EPF works like a recurring investment — a fixed amount is deposited every month and earns compound interest. The projected corpus is calculated using the future value of a recurring deposit formula.

Monthly Contribution

Monthly EPF = Basic Salary × (Employee % + Employer EPF %) ÷ 100

Corpus Projection

F = P × [((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r] × (1 + r)

F — future corpus value

P — monthly contribution

r — monthly interest rate (annual ÷ 12)

n — total months of contribution

Worked Example

Basic salary ₹50,000/month. Employee contribution 12% = ₹6,000. Employer EPF portion 3.67% = ₹1,835. Total monthly EPF contribution = ₹7,835. At 8.25% annual interest for 25 years (300 months):

Monthly rate r = 8.25% ÷ 12 = 0.6875%
Corpus ≈ ₹1.04 crore | Total deposited ≈ ₹23.5 lakh | Interest earned ≈ ₹80.5 lakh

The interest earned is more than three times the amount actually deposited — entirely tax-free.

EPF vs EPS — What's the Difference?

Many employees assume the employer's full 12% contribution goes into EPF. In reality, it is split between two separate schemes:

FeatureEPFEPS
Full nameEmployee Provident FundEmployee Pension Scheme
Employee contribution12% of basic + DANil
Employer contribution3.67% of basic + DA8.33% of basic + DA (capped ₹1,250/month)
Earns interestYes — at EPFO declared rateNo — provides monthly pension
WithdrawalLump sum at retirement / exitMonthly pension after age 58
TaxabilityTax-free after 5 years of servicePension is taxable as income

Note on this calculator

For simplicity, this calculator treats the full employer contribution as going to EPF. In practice, only 3.67% of the employer's share goes to EPF. Enter 3.67% as the employer contribution for a conservative, accurate projection.

EPF Withdrawal Rules and Tax Treatment

Full Withdrawal at Retirement

The entire EPF corpus — contributions plus interest — can be withdrawn tax-free upon retirement, provided the employee has completed 5 or more years of continuous service.

Withdrawal Before 5 Years

If EPF is withdrawn before completing 5 years of continuous service, the amount is added to the employee's taxable income and taxed at the applicable slab rate. TDS at 10% is deducted if the withdrawal exceeds ₹50,000.

Partial Withdrawal

EPFO allows partial withdrawals for specific purposes — home purchase, medical emergencies, higher education, or marriage — subject to conditions on years of service and withdrawal limits.

Job Change — Transfer, Don't Withdraw

When changing employers, always transfer your EPF balance to the new employer's PF account using the EPFO portal and your UAN. Withdrawing at this stage is one of the most costly financial mistakes a salaried employee can make.

EPF as Part of Your Retirement Plan

EPF is the mandatory baseline of retirement savings for salaried Indians — automatic, compulsory, and invisible. You never see the money leaving your account, which removes the temptation to spend it. But EPF alone is rarely sufficient to fund a comfortable retirement. Here is how it fits into a complete retirement framework:

🏛️

EPF — The Mandatory Base

Builds automatically throughout your career. Use this calculator to project your corpus and treat it as the non-negotiable foundation of your retirement savings.

📈

PPF — The Voluntary Supplement

Public Provident Fund offers the same tax-free compounding as EPF but is voluntary. Maximising your ₹1.5 lakh annual PPF contribution adds a powerful second pillar.

💹

SIP — Closing the Gap

Any shortfall between (EPF + PPF) and your retirement corpus target is what equity SIPs need to cover. Use the retirement calculator to find your target and size your SIPs accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current EPF interest rate?

The EPFO declared an interest rate of 8.25% for FY 2023-24. The rate is reviewed and announced by the EPFO Central Board of Trustees each year. Always update the calculator with the latest declared rate for accurate projections.

Is EPF applicable to all employees?

EPF is mandatory for all employees earning a basic salary up to ₹15,000/month in establishments with 20 or more employees. Employees earning above ₹15,000 can opt in voluntarily. Establishments with fewer than 20 employees may also be covered under certain conditions.

What is a UAN and why does it matter?

UAN stands for Universal Account Number — a 12-digit permanent number assigned to every EPF member by the EPFO. It remains the same across all employers throughout your career, making it easy to transfer or consolidate EPF accounts when you change jobs.

Should I withdraw EPF when changing jobs?

No. This is one of the most common and costly financial mistakes. EPF compounds tax-free over decades. Withdrawing early triggers tax (if service is under 5 years) and permanently destroys the compounding benefit. Always transfer your EPF to your new employer's PF account via the EPFO portal using your UAN.

What is VPF and should I use it?

Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) allows employees to contribute more than the mandatory 12% to their EPF account. The additional amount earns the same tax-free interest as EPF. Since there is no better risk-free, tax-free instrument at this interest rate, VPF is an excellent option for employees in higher tax brackets.

How do I check my EPF balance?

You can check your EPF balance through the EPFO member portal (epfindia.gov.in), the UMANG app, by sending an SMS to 7738299899 from your registered mobile number, or by giving a missed call to 011-22901406. Your UAN must be activated and linked to your Aadhaar and mobile number.
