What is CGPA?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the average of grade points obtained across all subjects over an entire academic programme or semester. Unlike a simple percentage, CGPA uses a point scale — most Indian universities use a 10-point scale — to represent academic performance in a standardised way.
CBSE introduced the 10-point CGPA system for Class 10 board exams to reduce exam stress and provide a broader performance band. Universities like VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, and most IITs and NITs use CGPA on a 10-point scale for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
How CGPA is Calculated
CGPA is calculated by dividing the sum of all grade points earned by the total number of subjects (or credits, depending on the system).
Formula
CGPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Number of Subjects
Each subject's grade point is determined by the grade obtained (e.g., A1 = 10, A2 = 9, B1 = 8, B2 = 7 on the CBSE scale). Sum all subject grade points and divide by the number of subjects.
Worked Example
A student scores grade points: 9, 8, 10, 7, 9, 8, 10, 9, 8, 7 across 10 subjects.
Total = 9+8+10+7+9+8+10+9+8+7 = 85
CGPA = 85 ÷ 10 = 8.5
CGPA to Percentage Conversion
Many employers, universities, and scholarship applications ask for percentage marks. The standard CBSE conversion formula is:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
Example: CGPA 8.5 → 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%
Note: This formula is specific to CBSE. Different universities use different multipliers — VTU uses 10, some universities use 9.5 or provide their own conversion table. Always check your institution's official conversion method before submitting applications.
| CGPA | Percentage (×9.5) | Grade Band |
|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | 95.0% | Outstanding |
| 9.0 – 9.9 | 85.5% – 94.1% | Excellent |
| 8.0 – 8.9 | 76.0% – 84.6% | Very Good |
| 7.0 – 7.9 | 66.5% – 75.1% | Good |
| 6.0 – 6.9 | 57.0% – 65.6% | Above Average |
| 5.0 – 5.9 | 47.5% – 56.1% | Average |
| Below 5.0 | Below 47.5% | Below Average |
CGPA vs GPA vs Percentage
CGPA (10-point)
- Used by CBSE, most Indian universities
- Scale: 0 to 10
- Cumulative across all semesters
- Converted to % using ×9.5 (CBSE)
GPA (4-point)
- Used by US universities
- Scale: 0 to 4.0
- A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0
- Required for US grad school applications
Percentage
- Traditional Indian system
- Scale: 0 to 100%
- Direct marks-based calculation
- Still used by many state boards
How to Improve Your CGPA
Focus on internal marks
Internals, assignments, and practicals often carry 20–40% weightage. Consistent performance here significantly boosts your CGPA.
Improve backlog subjects
Clearing backlogs and improving grades in repeated attempts directly raises your cumulative average.
Track semester-wise GPA
Monitor each semester's GPA to identify weak areas early. A single poor semester can drag down your CGPA significantly.
Prioritise high-credit subjects
In credit-based systems, subjects with more credits have a larger impact on CGPA. Prioritise these in your study plan.
