How Date Difference is Calculated
The most reliable method is to convert both dates to a common reference point (milliseconds since the Unix epoch), subtract, and convert back. This automatically handles all calendar irregularities. The broken-down result (years, months, days) is then derived by walking forward from the earlier date.

86,400,000 is the number of milliseconds in one day (24 × 60 × 60 × 1,000). The absolute value ensures the result is always positive regardless of which date is larger.
